On the 27-07-2017, the Legal Aid community development service group was at the medium security prison, Abolongo, Oyo.
In furtherance of our mission towards the sensitization campaign of the fundamental rights of the inmates and to liberate the oppressed from the bondage and shackles of oppression.
Unfortunately, after our interactions with some of the prisoners, we discovered that many of the inmates are been withheld on bailable offenses which, hitherto, would have been freed with prompt and adequate legal services. Most of those languishing in this facility are being detained due to lack of lawyers to their rescue and the fact that many of them could not met their bail conditions and fines apportioned them by the law court.
We were there with some of our corp lawyers to ascertain their offenses committed so as to enact and influence their prompt release and also to train them on some entrepreneurial skills.
However, after a brief meeting with some of the officials, we were given a time limit to interact with the inmates. From my personal interrogation of these people, I got to know that many of them claimed not to have committed the offense on which they are being punish, some claimed they were implicated on these offenses while the main suspect had been released, some argued that it was just a case of 'two fighting' that brought them to the facility, a particular man claimed he didn't know that his minor offense was changed to capital offense when he was brought before the magistrate, due to his inability to understand English language used by the judge.
Many of these inmates have spent months and years in this condition without any hope of getting out soon due to the incessant court adjournments.
The Legal Aid community service group hope to bring succour to some of these inmates with lesser and bailable offenses by consulting and working with the necessary authorities concerned, in other to liberate and bring freedom to as much as possible inmates of the prison.
